Using the abair.ie web-based synthesiser with a screen reader

You can paste a block of Irish text, up to 2,000 characters long into the Abair web page and request abair.ie to speak the text, or to generate the spoken text as an MP3 file for download.

The following sections list out detailed steps for using a Windows screen reader or the Apple VoiceOver screen reader on an Apple IOS device

Windows

The following section describes in detail how to get abair.ie to speak some Irish text, using a screen-reader such as NVDA or JAWS, on a Microsoft windows PC. After you do this once, you can bookmark the page and this will save your settings and it will be simpler the next time.

Step 1
The first step is to put the piece of Irish text you want Abair to speak, into the Windows clipboard. This can be done in a number of ways. For example, to select text, with most Windows screen readers, in most applications, (including browsers) you could do the following. Place the cursor on the beginning of the first word in the text, hold down the shift key, and move the cursor to the end of the text. Once selected in this way, press control c to copy the selected text to the clipboard.

Step 2
In your browser, Open www.abair.ie. By default this site opens in Irish. You can switch to the English interface by selecting the link entitled English, which is about the third link from the top of the page.

Step 3
Select the first link on the english page which is labelled "skip to main content" by pressing enter when your cursor is on this link. This brings you to the following heading on the page: "Welcome to abair.ie - The Irish Language Synthesiser"

Step 4
There is a set of links after this heading where you can select the Irish voice you want, such as, Gweedore or Connemara. To select the voice, place the cursor on the link and press enter.

Step 5
There is a speed combo box that can be set to whichever speed you want. In most Windows screen readers, you can move to the combo box by entering the single letter command C. The screen reader will say something like "combo box collapsed normal" Pressing enter on the combo box will activate it and you can change the speed from normal to slower or faster by moving up and down with arrow keys.

Step 6
Once you have selected the voice and the speed that you want, you can paste your text from the clipboard into the multi-line edit box labelled "Please enter some text..." You can move to this edit box with the cursor keys or by using the single letter navigation key "E". Once on the box, activate it by pressing enter and paste the text into the edit box with the command Control V.

Step 7
Move to the Synthesise button with the cursor or tab key or by using the single letter navigation command "B", and press spacebar or enter when you are on the Synthesise button. You need to pause for a moment for Abair to process the text. Abair will then speak it. If you would like Abair to repeat the text, press the Play button, or the Synthesise button again.

NOTE
When you have made the selections in steps 2 to 5 above, you can bookmark the page in your browser. This will save your settings and it will be simpler to use Abair the next time. Instead of opening www.abair.ie, open your saved bookmark. You can then go straight from step 1 to step 6.
